Maybe you or a friend have experience of an exercise or gym Horror Story, where everything goes wrong. I had a call the other day with someone who did. I’m sharing it with you today just to show you what can happen if you work with the wrong person.
Many think that a Personal Trainer is god-like, and all of them can deliver exactly whatever you want. But, like all things, there are good ones and not-so-good ones. Choosing the right PT is hugely important. Â Let me tell you how to find the right Personal Trainer for you.
I’m a PT with 30 years of experience in helping busy women over 40 to look and feel fabulous. I talk to people all the time about what’s worked for them and their fitness and weight loss, and what made them feel like a failure. So I get to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly of.
I had a chat recently with a lovely lady who was injured quite badly by using the wrong Personal Trainer. Â Mentioning no names of course. Â But this lady’s experience shows what can go wrong.
Her Trainer pushed her too hard … way too hard … much too soon. The lady used this Trainer because she needed to get in shape, and the Trainer looked absolutely great herself. Â So she had faith in her, so she went along with what the PT asked her to do.
She ended up lifting far too much weight, far too many times, for her fitness level. The result? Â Well, she had to abandon the Training Programme because she was unable to actually walk. So she wasted her investment in her own health and fitness. And she was left sore, and angry. Â And of course, disappointed.
Another lady I spoke to a while back was asked to perform a weights routine … whilst balancing on an unstable surface!  The client – may be a victim is a better word – did not at that point have the ability to do either of the tasks well, let alone do both together.  So needless to say, she fell, and hurt her ankle badly.  Another PT failure.
Accidents can happen of course. Â But your Personal Trainer should state in their small print …Â and yes they should have small print …. that they “seek to minimize your personal injury at all times”.
You should also check that your chosen PT has insurance.
It’s also important to choose a Trainer who has experience of working with people like you. Â Do they have clients who are in a similar physical shape to you? Â In other words, if you’re 45 and 3 stone overweight, ask them if they can show you photos and testimonials from someone else like them.
The best Trainers will even put you in touch with past clients so you can ask them what they thought.
A good Personal Trainer will not have just Reviews – they will have a tribe of raving fans!
Personally, as a 60-year-old, I would also want to work with someone LIKE ME …. in other words, a mature female who can actually empathize with what it’s like to be in a peri or post menopausal body issues. Plus of course, the time commitments and stresses that caring for either elderly relatives or grandchildren can bring.
When I get a call or a message myself from someone who wants to work with me, it makes my heart sing when she says any of the following …
- I just want to stop self-sabotaging and get back on track with my weight and health.
- I am too busy to find time for myself.
- Crikey I have a dog, 3 grandchildren, and an elderly parent to care for, so I have no me-time for myself.
- I tried Slimming World and Weight Watchers … but the weight has gone back on, and more.
- I just want someone to give me a kick up the bum – I know what to do, but I just don’t do it!
If that sounds like you, then I like to think I know your circumstances extremely well. And what’s more, I know I can help you to help yourself … without any fear of failure!
