Why Lifting Weights Might Not Work

I’m going against popular option here, but feel the need to comment.  We see constant recommendations for women to lift weights, like men do, often heavily promoted by young PT’s, both guys & girls, who look truly sensational. Women over 40, 50 or 60 might find this difficult on many levels

  • Peri and post menopausal women risk injury if too much weight is lifted too soon
  • Many PT’s have zero experience of delivering mature women’s fitness needs
  • Unfit people might find gyms intimidating
  • The psychology of weight training is likely unappealing – it’s a man thing

I work with and mentor mature women who feel like they’ve “lost” something, and want it back.  Menopause and the demands of  a busy life have steamed in and they’ve lost strength, energy, tone, mobility, and a dress size they love.  Along with this draining of self confidence, comes an equally rapid decline in motivation, asking themselves if there’s any point in it all anyway.

Here’s the bottom line

Nothing is more important than your physical and mental health.  You might think you’ve a million problems you need to solve … but losing your health suddenly means you’ll have only ghastly one.

Follow my 5 Steps to Fitness for Women 40+

  1. Find activity that you love. If that’s the gym, great, but don’t stress if its not.  The rule is you have to LOVE it – otherwise you won’t bother.
  2. Exercise should push you and make you tired in some way.
  3. Stop dieting. Cook for yourself from scratch a lot more. Find plant-based recipes which are easy, tasty and nutritious.  The Happy Pear is a wonderful place to start.
  4. Drop alcohol. Your menopausal body will not process well.  You do not have to apologise for not ingesting a toxic upf .
  5. Move more – outside – a lot more. Walk daily.  Here in Shrewsbury where I run my Personal Training biz for women 40+, we are gifted with some wonderful walks.  How about you?
