I honestly had a moment when I could not find ANYTHING! We’d just moved house. The removal company had brought our entire lives from one house to another. And everything was – quite literally – everywhere. If you’ve ever moved house you’ll know what that’s like. Even things I’d packed myself – I completely forgot what was where.
It was a moment of panic. Tired and emotional … tears …. omg how do we do this.
We had created temporary chaos in our lives. It made me realize the importance of old habits. Those million things we do all the time, every day, but don’t even have to think about.
You don’t (usually) have to consider where your toothbrush is. You know instinctively how to turn on the kettle. Or maybe charge your phone. You’re able to make beans on toast whilst doing 3 other things at the same time, possibly whilst chatting to a friend.
Our amazing brains internalize so much. We operate on autopilot all the time, making complex micro-decisions in the back of our brains without even being aware of doing so. Experts say that only 3-4% of our conscious actions are actual decisions. We have a set of rules, like a program, enabling us to be in control subconsciously of our lives and our daily activities. We (mostly)know where we’ve put things, how things work, and how to operate in a complex world. The internalized patterns are there, on autopilot.
If that program no longer works after everything changes – like when you move house, or maybe go on holiday – your autopilot doesn’t work. The old patterns are not there. You know you need to create some new ones really fast because it’s stressful to be “out of control”.
(I had that moment on Day 1 in this new house of ours, and it wasn’t nice. I had no choice but to create order).

Imagine this when applied to your eating/drinking/exercise habits. You usually eat and drink the same way most days, right? Most of us do.
Now take it a step further. Imagine if your autopilot program is actually DAMAGING. You might be perpetuating something in your daily life, without really making a decision to do so. You’re almost unaware that there’s a problem.
Well, let’s say, every lunchtime you have a can of coke. Or every evening you have a glass of wine. Those are things that have become easy to do. So you keep doing them. They are nice. You do them because you would say you enjoy them.
But those 2 things (amongst many others) may be responsible for the increase in your waist size which destroys your self-confidence and means your clothes don’t fit you anymore.
My advice to you is to take action to BE AWARE of EVERYTHING that you put in your mouth to identify habits for a whole week. Yes, we know it’s well documented that the process of doing this will change your habits, But habit change is probably what you need if you are consistently failing to lose weight, and keep it off permanently.
They say you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. I say you can’t change your habits without it feeling bl**dy uncomfortable and difficult. But trust me – it’s worth it in the end.

- Analyze your eating/drinking for a whole week. Write it down as you go.
- Get support – from friends or a professional weight loss fitness trainer like me.
- Tell people what you’re doing and become accountable.
- Keep records of your progress.
- See your Goal as ALREADY ACHIEVED – imagine how it will be when…
- And celebrate every single achievement – however small.
